This group, formed by young African American singers of classical vocal training, performs excerpts from operas with African American roots, such as Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, Duke Ellington’s Queenie Pie, George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and music pieces by composers such as Kurt Weill, William Grant Still and Antonin Dvorak. They combine these music pieces with Negro Spirituals sung mostly a capella. They are accompanied at the piano by its director, Dr. Gregory Hopkins. A few other instruments might be added depending on the programme.
